Please come out and help us make a lasting memory for the fifth graders!

The teachers have set up individual times to publish, but if you find yourself

Dear Families of 5th Graders,

Ohio school districts are in the process of implementing the Common Core State Standards as directed by the Ohio Department of Education.  The Common Core is a set of internationally benchmarked teaching standards that is designed to help students better prepare for college, career and competition in the global economy.

During the 2012-13 school year, Olentangy Local Schools will be implementing Common Core mathematics, which will require restructuring the district’s existing course offerings and the acceleration options available to students.  As you can see on the enclosed chart, students entering seventh grade will have the opportunity to enter an accelerated path.  Those who select/are selected for this option will be eligible to earn one high school credit in middle school by taking Common Core algebra I in eighth grade.

It is important to note that while many of these courses have familiar-sounding names, the curriculum has changed significantly.  The new Common Core courses are even more rigorous than Olentangy’s existing courses and should provide our students an excellent foundation as they continue their educational careers.

To learn more about the changes to Olentangy’s math offerings, please plan to attend an information session at Liberty Middle School on May 9th at 6:00 p.m.

You can also learn more by visiting the Common Core Math Transition link at www.olentangy.k12.oh.us.
