OLSD Counseling programs are designed according to the American School Counselor Association's (ASCA) National Model. This model encourages a comprehensive and developmental counseling program that addresses the social/ emotional, career, and academic needs of every student.

School counselors provide short-term individual support for students, as needed.  Additional services include:

• Crisis intervention

• Consultation with parents and school staff

• Coordination with outside agencies and therapists

• Referrals for community services

Small groups are offered for additional support throughout the year, based on the students' needs. Topics may include: new students, friendship skills, organizational skills, self-esteem, and more.

• Students may request to speak with the counselor.

• Parents are invited to contact the counselor to request additional support for their child, as needed.

• A member of the school staff, including classroom teachers, may contact the counselor for additional support.

The school counselor visits every classroom at least once per month for classroom lessons to discuss a variety of topics including: emotions, coping skills, conflict resolution, friendship, teamwork, and more. These lessons address the academic, career, and social/ emotional domains, and are related to district curriculum maps. View the district curriculum maps.

In addition, school counselors provide instruction for developmentally appropriate state required annual child sexual abuse prevention education.
